Products for Demanding Oil and Gas ApplicationsCoatings for Tanks

Storage and holding tanks come in all shapes and sizes, ranging from domestic home heating oil tanks in northern climates to gigantic twenty-million gallon water tanks in the Middle East and digester tanks in wastewater treatment plants around the world.  They may be below ground, on-ground or elevated. They are fabricated from various materials, with steel and concrete being the most common. Their functions are as varied as their final locations. They are often expected to last for decades; for example, today’s underground fuel storage tanks have a life expectancy in excess of a century. One thing that all steel tanks have in common is that they need to be protected, both inside and out.  That has been our core competence for over thirty five years. Over the years, we have also developed class-leading coating systems for concrete tanks as well.

Coatings for tanks can be categorized into three groups: interior liners, external coatings for underground use and external coatings for above ground use. See chart below and refer to the Technical Data Sheets and Chemical Resistance Brochure for various products to learn details.

Interior linings

Typically, these have two functions, to protect the tank from corroding or to protect the purity of the contained product. The correct choice of coating is critical when one considers the variety of materials that they are expected to hold, from jet fuel to molasses, to drinking water. In many cases, the linings must also conform to various regulations to ensure worker and public safety. Temperature and abrasive turbulence may be factors to consider. For linings, Madison has developed a series of robust and easy-to-apply plural component coatings, tailored for specific service conditions. All have a proven track record. CorroCote II Plus, CorroCote II UltraLiner, Flexcel II, CorroCote II Classic and CorroCote II PW are the work horses of the product offering. For those instances where a plural component system is not an option, CorroCote “S”, CorroCote II Slow, AlumiZinc “S” and our MG series of epoxies can be applied by conventional methods.

Exterior Coatings, Below Ground Exterior protection for underground tanks has been the crowning achievement for Madison Chemical. For 35 years, we have dominated the North American market in this market. Over 4 billion sq ft of Madison coatings have been used to protect underground storage tanks from the harsh underground elements. CorroCote II Classic, CorroCote “S”, FibreThane and FibreThane Plus are the leaders in this area.

Exterior Coatings, Above Ground

Coatings for the exterior of above ground tanks experience the widest variety of environmental conditions: - abrasive wind-borne particulates, UV light, moisture, temperature extremes and chemicals such as acid rain. Physical performance is not the only criterion to be considered. Aesthetic considerations such as colour and gloss retention also come into play. Overall service conditions and customer expectations range from basic protection to long term heavy duty performance.

This is where Madison’s newest innovations fill the needs for an easy to apply, time and money saving products.

For mild to moderate service, the FusionClad waterborne system makes it possible to achieve industrial grade protection for steel tanks without the need for expensive blasting or other elaborate surface preparation. Start with FerroGrip, Madison’s proprietary surface preparation compound; FerroGrip removes all contaminants, etches the surface and leaves behind an adhesion promoting compound (AP-50) that tightly bonds to the surface. The subsequent coatings of FusionClad primer and Fusion Clad TC or the more robust FusionClad TC Ultra, all of which work synergistically, form a durable and long lasting protection.

If increased protection is needed for moderate to heavy duty service, the same blast-free technology has been incorporated into our AlumiZinc “S” polyurethane. It delivers the next generation of Zinc Rich primers in a user-friendly, surface tolerant and economical format. AlumiZinc “S”, which imparts a galvanized look to the structure, can be used on its own or top-coated. An example is the UV-stable family of AcrylaThane products which offer excellent adhesion and impact resistance and near-automotive performance. For high throughput, consider TufSheen II, the only instant-setting plural component aliphatic polyurethane on the market. TufSheen PreCatalyzed and CorroCote Plus round off Madison’s product offering for aboveground tank coatings.

Madison also offers a range of two component Epoxy products (basecoats and topcoats) for corrosion resistance and immersion service. Please see the Technical data sheets for specific properties and application instructions.
