Coatings for Weathering Steel

Madison Chemical offers a unique alternative when coating weathering steel (the red structural steel often known by the trade mark “Corten”).

Historically, this type of steel must be aggressively blasted in order for coatings to adhere properly. This is no longer necessary. In 2008, Madison launched its “No-Blast” technology, featuring a family of unique, proprietary Surface Preparation Compounds. One of these compounds, GalvaGrip, is ideal for preparing Galvanized steel and weathering steel to receive a high performance protective coating. GalvaGrip, an environmentally friendly compound that resembles car wash foam, will dissolve mill scale, corrosion, oil and other contaminants, creating a pristine surface ready for coating. Adhesion is well over 2,000 psi, making the finished system suitable for heavy duty and severe service, not just routine atmospheric exposure.

Our No-Blast approach is cost effective. Capital and operating costs are low and there is no cumbersome equipment to buy, maintain or mobilize. The results are also more predictable. The end result is uniform and areas requiring additional preparation are easily identified.
