Other Coatable Substrates

Elsewhere in this section of the Madison Chemical website, you will read about the substrates with which we most commonly work: carbon steel, concrete, galvanized steel, weathering steel, and ductile iron. However, we work with a variety of other substrates as well. The list includes wood, plastic, and aluminum.

For a number of years, the coating of wood was incidental for us. The opening of our consumer products division in 2006 changed all that. Our branch plant in Bracebridge, Ontario manufactures polymer coated real wood siding. Recently, the world’s first low maintenance real wood decking was added to the product mix. Other wood coated products are on the drawing boards. At present, we coat many thousands of feet of wood, day in and day out. We have learned much about this sometimes tricky substrate. For example, we have developed epoxy technology that penetrates deep into wood and reacts with the lignens, so as to form a bond that is virtually impossible to break. But there’s so much more. We have also developed unique expertise in the coating of plastics. The invention of our AP-50 Adhesion Promoter in 2008 makes it simple to coat PVC (vinyl) successfully. ABS and other plastics can also be coated without some of the problems encountered with older coating technologies.

Aluminum is a difficult substrate for coatings. Madison technology changes all that. Our FerroGrip Surface Conditioner works superbly to prepare aluminum and any of our coatings containing AP-50 will bond tenaciously to the treated aluminum surface. This is an environmentally friendly and cost effective alternative to some of the elaborate and costly ways of preparing aluminum for long term coating protection.
