MariThane Liquid Zinc
Next Generation Marine Zinc Rich Primer
MariThane Liquid Zinc is a high-solid, polyurethane-based primer/coating combining the best of several corrosion protection technologies: aluminum and micaceous iron oxide (MIOX) for barrier protection; the sacrificial protection of zinc; plus corrosion inhibitors. In addition, this product now contains Madison’s AP-50 Adhesion Promoter for even better performance. These proven technologies work synergistically within MariThane Liquid Zinc, allowing this product to outperform every other high-performance primer on the market and offering protection equivalent to hot-dip galvanizing. It is designed for marine applications where long term corrosion protection is required for both immersion and heavy to severe atmospheric service.
MariThane Liquid Zinc is paint-like and very easy to apply by brush, roller or spray. When applied, it polymerizes to form a monolithic film that works like galvanizing to protect any ferrous substrates. It is effective at very low thicknesses (three to four dry mils) but can easily be applied to higher thicknesses without mud-cracking. Because of its pleasing silver metallic finish and its ability to form a flawless finish on porous substrates, this product is also used on concrete and wood structures.
Unlike other zinc rich primers, this product is “surface tolerant” – thanks to AP-50 – and does not require an aggressive white metal blast for most applications. Obviously, the better the preparation the longer the life expectancy, but MariThane Liquid Zinc will provide protection under a variety of less-than-ideal situations. For atmospheric service, the cost and headaches of blasting can be eliminated entirely; simply prepare the surface with Madison’s FerroGrip Surface Preparation Compound, an environmentally-friendly, soap-like product that dissolves rust and scale to provide a pristine, coatable surface. This product is typically teamed up with Madison's MariThane 1:4 Aliphatic topcoats. Where color selection is not an issue, it may be used on its own (two coats recommended) as a corrosion barrier on steel. MariThane ‘S’ will also perform well on concrete as a barrier coating.
Typical Applications
Application Summary and Technical Data
MariThane Liquid Zinc ‘single component plus catalyst’ system. It applies like paint, most commonly with an airless spray gun at pressures in the 2,000 to 2,500 psi range. It has a variable pot life, dependent on catalyst selection (15 minutes to two hours.) and is cured to touch within 30 minutes to two hours.
