AlumiZinc 'S'

Next Generation Zinc Rich Primer

AlumiZinc 'S' is the latest technology in Zinc Rich Primers. It is a high-solids, polyurethane-based primer/coating combining the best of several corrosion protection technologies: aluminum and micaceous iron oxide (MIOX) barrier protection; the sacrificial protection of zinc; plus corrosion inhibitors. It also comes with Madison AP-50 Adhesion Promoter as a standard ingredient. These proven technologies work synergistically within AlumiZinc 'S', allowing this product to perform as well as or better than older technologies while bringing a host of handling advantages.

One advantage is that AlumiZinc “S” is very surface tolerant and, unlike most zinc rich primers, does not require an aggressive white metal blast. In fact, it works very well in combination with Madison’s FerroGrip and GalvaGrip Surface Conditioners, thereby eliminating the need for blasting altogether. While fully effective at about the same film build as older types of zinc rich primers, it can be built to a thicker film without mud cracking, thus giving the owner the option of an extra measure of protection where extended service life or unusually harsh conditions are factors to be considered. It will set at sub-freezing temperatures and has an extended recoat window. All of these characteristics are welcome news to anyone who has been putting up with all the idiosyncrasies of their current product.

This product is typically teamed up with Madison's AcrylaThane topcoats (see AcrylaThane 55 and AcrylaThane 5200 Technical Data Sheets).

Where the user wishes to have a pleasing galvanized appearance, AlumiZinc 'S' may be used on its own (two coats recommended) as a corrosion barrier on steel. AlumiZinc ‘S’ will also perform well on concrete and wood as a barrier coating.

Typical Applications

  • Substrates where resistance to rust or corrosion undercutting is required

Application Summary

AlumiZinc ‘S’ is a ‘Single-Component-Plus-Catalyst’ system. It applies like paint, most commonly with an airless spray gun at pressures in the 2,000 to 2,500 psi range. It has a variable pot life, dependent on catalyst selection (15 min. to two hrs.) and is cured to touch within 30 min. to two hours.
