AcrylaThane 55

Acrylic Aliphatic Exterior Coating System

AcrylaThane 55 is a high performance, user-friendly coating that offers near-automotive outdoor protection in a semi-gloss finish. The polymer backbone is an acrylic aliphatic polyurethane that meets the VOC requirements in most areas.

The handling characteristics of AcrylaThane 55 offer several unique benefits. It has a long pot life (four hours or more) but is surprisingly quick setting. It is “cured-to-touch” in about 45 minutes and “cured to handle” in about six hours. Also, it can be built to a thicker film than most aliphatic polyurethanes (five or more dry mils / 25 or more microns), making it the ideal one-coat, direct-to-metal product for medium duty industrial atmospheres.

Another handling advantage of AcrylaThane is that it is no longer necessary to perform expensive abrasive blasting of the substrate. Of course, blasting will always be a good choice, but AcrylaThane 55 works just as well over surfaces that have been prepared using Madison’s FerroGrip or GalvaGrip Surface Conditioners. For even greater corrosion resistance, prime with AlumiZinc “S” Zinc Rich Primer.

AcrylaThane 55 offers excellent adhesion and impact resistance and is extremely tough and durable. This product withstands the rigors of normal shipping and handling much better than conventional coating systems. AcrylaThane 55 offers years of excellent color fastness and gloss retention with little maintenance.

Typical Applications

  • shop-fabricated and field erected storage tanks
  • machinery
  • equipment
  • beams, girders, trusses, structural steel
  • bridges and bridge components
  • water/wastewater facilities
  • agricultural
  • architectural
  • generally, any structure fabricated from steel, iron, galvanized, concrete, or wood

Application Summary

AcrylaThane 55 is a Mix-and-Apply format (1:4 ratio) aliphatic system. It applies like paint, most commonly with an airless spray gun at pressures in the 2,000 to 2,500 psi range. It has an extended pot life (three to four hours) but sets quickly when applied (cured to touch in about 45 minutes).

Related Product

AcrylaThane 5200 is a sister product with the same format. It has a higher gloss and higher solids content (meets proposed tougher VOC restrictions). Cure to touch time is somewhat longer and pot life is shorter. Film build is about four dry mils (100 microns) per coat. Refer to Product Profile or Technical Data Sheet for more information.

Available Variations:

When applying AcrylaThane 55 over FerroGrip or GalvaGrip Surface Conditioners (non-invasive alternatives to abrasive blasting), be sure to ask for the “AP-50 version”. This version contains Madison’s AP-50 Adhesion Promoter, which works synergistically with FerroGrip and GalvaGrip and increases adhesion by up to 50%.

AcrylaThane 55 (AM) is a ceramic-modified version of this product that contains MicroSpear, an EPA-registered anti-microbial agent. While the coating itself is naturally resistant to bacterial attack, MicroSpear resists the growth of mould and mildew on the surface of the coating (a health concern in many applications) and minimizes the risk of MIC (Microbially Induced Corrosion).

AcrylaThane 55 (CM) is a version of this product containing NanoShield, an additive consisting of microscopic spheres of real ceramic that enhance the abrasion and impact resistance of the finished product without detracting from other physical properties.
