Coatings for Wood
For a number of years, the coating of wood was incidental for us. The opening of our consumer products division in 2006 changed all that. Our branch plant in Bracebridge Ontario manufactures polymer – coated real wood siding. Recently, the world’s first low maintenance real wood decking was added to the product mix. Other wood coated products are on the drawing boards. At present, we coat many thousands of feet of wood, day in and day out. We have learned much about this sometimes tricky substrate. For example, we have developed epoxy technology that penetrates deep into wood and reacts with the lignin to form a bond that is virtually impossible to break.
Cottage Coat is the liquid polymer coating at the heart of the GemThane wood products revolution. Cottage Coat was designed specifically for the long term protection of wood and similar substrates. It's now available to maintenance professionals in a user-friendly kit form.
Nano-technology
The Cottage Coat formula also contains ceramic nanospheres called NanoShield, yielding a phenomenal improvement in protection against impact, abrasion and erosion. We’ve been using nano-technology since 1999 and it is just now being adopted by the auto industry to make exterior clear coats more chip and abrasion resistant.
Goes on like paint
Cottage Coat is supplied in a very user-friendly format that handles and applies very much like a high quality oil-based paint. If you are applying it over an existing finish, the surface preparation is straight forward. First power wash the surface, then scrape off any loose paint and lightly sand the area to be coated. Then apply GemThane Cottage Coat by brush, roller or airless spray. No primer is required. Cottage Coat will cure at any ambient temperature, even under sub-freezing conditions.
But there’s so much more. Contact us and let a GemThane representative help you make your maintenance coating product selection.
